What is music to you?

Take a second and think about it.
What is music to you? How does it impact you? How does it make you feel? What does it inspire?

I recently reflected upon the key role music plays in my life. No, I may not make music, but yet I still hold it close. It is my portal to relaxation. It is the melody that releases my stress. It is the inspiration of my poems. It is the beat to my heart.

So I ask you, what is music to you?

Peace.

Who is the Best MC?

If Hip hop heads around the world armed themselves to debate who the best MC is of all time it would be probable to think that the whole world would cease to exist. The truth is all MC's are appreciated no two can be compared in the same manor (other than all the "LiL's" and the "Youngs"). Each MC expresses his talent and thoughts in very diverse ways showing who they are as a person... and as legend tells us no two persons are the same
However.... there are some MC's who have proven to have mastered their art and show the Hip Hop world who they are with raw talent and ability My top five MC's are:

Geologic : Blue Scholars
Blu : Blu and Exile
Little Brother
Mos Def
Mr. M Medieros
....
there's just so many

Relax. To the Max.

Stratus, by Uyama Hiroto.  Relaxing music.  Kinda.  There are no lyrics, but good music doesn't always have to have lyrics (I might be very wrong but that's just my opinion).

Break_dancing

Break_dancing is yet another form of expression in both Hip-Hop and the dance world. It's origins can be traced back all the way to African tribal dances. It first showed up in America in New York City in the 1960's. Africa Bambaataa founded The Kings. The Kings were the first crew, who were part of a bigger group who held graffiti artists and MC's, called Zulu Nation. Discrepancies were solved through dance battles instead of violence. Break dancing was at its height when the Rock Steady Crew was breaking in the subways of NYC. Now break_dancing is world wide. There is an annual world wide battle called the Battle of the Year, that takes place in Germany. Crews from 18 nations battle it out to see who the best crew in the world is. The documentary "Planet B-Boy" documents one year of the battle and what the crews go through to get there. If interested look it up, its a good movie. Here is a video of the best moments in the history of this event.

Expansion- the Zeek Theory

The concept of fraternities and elite clubs allows some people in society to socialize in a way that allows them connections, jobs, support and a sense of acceptance. Why can we not do the same thing with Modern Poets and Composers? We can expand the MPC club outside of Loyola as a Hip Hop fraternity that gives those who have a potential life or career in Hip hop. The exclusive-ness is a motive for the people who really "love" hip hop to boost their game and show what they have amongst a peer group of similar talent. In the future the club can sponsor shows, give loans, and travel across America allowing those youth to become who they want to be with their own talent. The club filters out the regular hip hop listener or fan from the hip hop head who sees it as a form of liveliness and career.

Talk to Wise Man for ideas or critiques.
This is currently under consideration by the executive board.
Feedback will be given as soon as a decision on this concept has been made.
Peace.

Meeting #1

MPC booth at the activity fair was busy non-stop with Simon on the tables mixing it up. I have strong faith that this year is gonna be legit. Agenda for the first meeting was basically house keeping. Hugh, the president, talked about the goal of the club being an open forum for expression whether musically, artistically, or lyrically. The rest of the executive board introduced themselves, Simon, Ez, Lorenzo, and Jason, plus "hip hop lover" Andy and the "cheerleader" Mario. Overall a good meeting to set out the plan for the club and already I've had an offer from a new member of the club to bring in a new artist. Good things await this year. I'll keep you posted on the 411 about the shirts as soon as I get the info.

Peace.

Activities Fair

Is manana.
Definitely come and check out the booth.
It's gonna be something that Loyola has never seen.
I'll put up pics next time.
I'll leave you with some poetry.

"Distant"
I built my house far from the world.
Far from the hustle and bustle, which made my head twirl.
Built in a space far from all others.
Built in a place where peace and quiet forms tranquility.
Far from the loud noises in the city considered normality.
In a place where ones thoughts can be heard.
Emotions shown in expression, without speaking a word.
A place where ideals reign supreme, yes that's my dream.
I will build my house far from the world, does that seem obscene?
-Lorenzo Alvarez-

Peace.

Global Interest

Most of the time Hip-Hop is seen by society as only talking about guns, money, and women, not ever talking about anything of substance or meaning. However, if people only looked below the surface they would find many artists talking about various important issues in society such as poverty, politics, and racism. "Eye Water" by Cassius ft. Pharrell actually talks about Global Warming and the effects that man's technology is having on the earth.
Hip Hop is one form for MC's to express their ideas on a certain subject, in an artistic way through their lyrics.
Hip Hop has global interest.

Eye water (feat. P Williams-new version) - Cassius

What happened to Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik we all love ?

Just another thought today @ loyola everyone . What happened to Outkast ???

To me it seems as if Outkast changed their sound too much, that they are losing their original crowd. What happened to the gangster OG rap like Aquemini, Player's Ball, ATLiens, or Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik? wtheck is "Morris Brown" , and "Hey Ya" ? Don't get me wrong , i understand that times change and so does style eventually , but ehh . . . idk i want the old Outkast back . I couldn't find a music video that they would let me post , so just listen to the song . Leave comments

Foreign Exchange

Mann everyone needs to get on this Foreign Exchange Album titled Connected. It is an album that collabs between the smooth easy-going beats of Nicolay, and overly under-rated North Carolina rapper Phonte . If your looking for a nice sound , something easy to just sit and bob yur head to , or even do your homework haha. This is a must get . I'll pop my head in to just talk about random thoughts of the day , or just to say hi . Keep the music playin yall .

Akira's Hip Hop Shop

"Akira loves rap music, and owns a record shop in the U.S. One day, he falls in love with an African American girl who starts to work at his shop. Soon racial and cultural differences, stereotypes from friends and family start to interrupt their relationship. Will their love break through all these obstacles?"

An interesting take on interracial relationships...director balances the two cultures differences and oppositions quite well, while at the same time blending the relationship with hip hop, but not over doing it. Shot in LA by director Joe Doughrity, who worked as the assistant of John Singleton on the set of "Boyz N The Hood." If you're an LA native, you'll immediately notice downtown and the 10 freeway exits at the beginning...take a look.

New Style vs. New Style

One of my favorite MC's is Common Sense aka Common. Originating from Chi-town, he brought a unique flavor to the lyrical game, from the way he wrote his lyrics to the way he spit it. I have followed him and his career, and own all his albums either physically or digitally and have noticed over the years a big change in his style. Lyrically his content just seems to keep dropping lower. The biggest drop is on a new song "Universal Mind Control" where he doesnt really talk about anything meaningful. Dont get me wrong the beat is banging, its just I'm not used to this style from him and honestly I prefer his old style, I mean he's freakin DANCING in the new video. Come on now.
What do you think?
Comment away, I wanna see what others think about the change in Common.

The DOC

One of the illest MCs in the history of hip-hop came from my great city Los Angeles, well Compton to be exact . There's only one problem, he was in an accident which damaged his voice box. This tragedy resulted in the DOC having to end his career as an MC and settle for writing. Over the years he has written songs for West Coast greats such as Snoop Dogg, Eazy E and Dr. Dre. He's also the father of Erykah Badu's daughter Puma, cool huh? It's Funky Enough is on of my favorites so it would only be right to share it.

Soulful Legendary Underground Music is What I listen to, what about you?

So right at this point in time, Elzhi of Slum Village is my favorite MC in the game, hands down. If you don't believe me check him on his debut Album "The Preface" on iTunes, go buy it whatever (CLASSIC STATUS). His lyrical skill cannot be recreated. He teaches people how to rap!!!!

T3 (the other member of Slum Village is equally dope)

B Boys

When I was 8 the friends I hung out with were 12 (they lived right across the street and we'd play everyday.  Play.  Hide and seek and other games).  My next door neighbor, a girl (Tomboy) was also my friend and all of us would play.  Everyday.  If one of us was not outside we'd go knock on each others' doors and asked if they he or she could come out play.  What does this have to do with Hip Hop?  Those friends literally jammed the first CD's I had ever listened to in my ear (NWA, Beastie Boys, and Dr. Dre.  The Tomboy introduced me to Blink but that's another story for another blog).  Since then, I've been hooked between Hip Hop and rock.  Now, I feel it's my turn to turn (turn to turn haha) you on to Hip Hop.  Hip Hop is great; it's not all about guns and bitches.  It's about playing with words and being creative.  Get your headphones jam them into your computer, then jam them into your ears. You will check out this video.
